The Positive and Negative
By Sarah

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 4th, and have subbed long term in 1st and 2nd grades. The follwoing worked for all grades. First, I reward students who are choosing to model appropriate behaviors. Children live to be noticed. By saying, "I like
how I see...What an example...He is ready to learn..." the rest of the class is encrouaged to do the same because they too would like to be recognized.

Second, I hand out special privelages such as choosing the stickers for 100%s, choosing a friend to be first in line, or giving the student specials topics to reserch and share with the class. ("I need you to help me teach reading

tomorrow. Can you look up a few facts about...and help me share it with the class?" They are things the students have to earn, and when problem children demand, I tell them special privelages must be earned. "Show me you can behavior like a...grader. I need you to be an example..."

Finally, some days no amount of positive reinforcement will help, and on thoses days I am careful to watch my tone, (keep it low and calm all day), and I hand out detentions like candy.
No misbehaviors can be tolerated.
