on-the-back extras By teachfla

Well, I teach the prefix, suffix skills the old-fashioned way during the WW block (Example: -ly means "in a ______ way, so kindly means in a kind way," etc.)Then, when we have a WW word that has -ly, I have kids tell | my the literal definition (I use the word "literal") of the word. So, an on-the-back activity might be give the literal definition for this week's words (as long as all are pre/suffixes.) Sometimes, after teaching parts of speech, I'll have them put parts of speech for all the weekly WW words. Sometimes, I have different questions for each word. Here is an example of that: Words of the | | week: usually, beautiful, write, right1. give the literal definition of usually (in a usual way) 2. write the part of speech of beautiful (adjective) 3. what is a noun (person, place, thing, animal) 4. Use "write" correctly in a sentence (I will write my friend a letter.) 5. Write a word that rhymes with "right" (light, bright.) I come up with these mostly off the top of my head. When I introduce the weekly words, I discuss each word in terms of parts of speech, prefixes/suffixes, finding root words, etc. so my kids are used to talking about words in this way. It really has worked well for me, and constantly reminds my kids what nouns, verbs, and adjectives are. Let me know if you have any other questions.
