Seasonal vs At Will By Carol

Susan, When did you file for unemployment? If you filed during a recess (e.g., summer vaction) then they will categorically deny benefits. Once the school year begins anew you can re-file without a problem and they | will retroactively pay you for the summer if you were laid off in California. So I am curious as to when you filed and if you re-filed after the recess (i., Did you file at the end of the school year and the beginning of summer recess.) Please advise. I take it you were a classified employee with a contract, so the rules may be different than for certificated, at-will, substitute | | teachers. I have read that some districts require contracted employees, teachers and/or aides, to waive their right to unemployment in their contracts. That might also be another reason you were denied benefits if you had a contract and it was so stipulated. What do you mean by "riffed" at the end of the year? Do you mean laid off or fired? Did you research the laws yourself? I'm not saying your wrong but I labored with a lot of misconceptions for years until I did my own research. One of those misconceptions was that I was not entitled to unemployment benefits because I was a school employee-period. I didn't know about such qualifiers as non school wages, or jobs being contingent on student enrollment or reduced wages during the school year. Just curious not critical. Carol
