Centers was something I started this year. It was a great learning experience for me! It takes a lot of preparation and modeling to make it effective for the students. Special ed students need it modeled repeatedly and everything needs to be explicitly stated and shown. There are many great web sites that I got information from. My initial inspiration was from Dr. Bertie Kingore's book, Centers in Minutes. Her web site is at bertiekingore.com. I noticed she now has volume 2 out of the book that is for learners with reading and writing difficulties. I'll probably purchase that. I had taught a workshop on the content of the book with the Gifted and Talented teachers in our district. I also use Guided Reading (the Fountas & Pinnell way) in my classroom. It is research based and much can be found on the internet about it. A good place to start is at http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/curriculum/english/guided_rdg.html. If you want to email me, I'd be glad to send you my PowerPoint presentations and Resource pages on either or both. Hope this helps.
