Sending the wrong message.

Hi cgreen,

I also think your set-up is too complex. I think the one message your students are probably getting is that they have many chances and lots of time to make-up their work. You say it's due Tuesday, but it's not
really due Tuesday. You say it's due Wednesday, or Thursday, or even Friday, but it's not really due those days, either. The next week, they see their grades and have that day and the next and the next and the next and the next to get it done. To a kid, that's forever.

And when, for some strange reason, you stop giving them second (and third and fourth...) chances to do their work, they

can't understand why. You gave them lots of chances before - why not now?

I teach fifth grade. The students' work is due at the beginning of the school-day. If they turn it in the next morning, it's worth half the points. I don't accept it more than a day late. I also have a similar parent-signature policy as other teachers have mentioned.

At the end of every day, I check that each student has filled out their "Homework Due" log. It is no surprise to their parents, their tutors, or themselves which homework is due the next day. The homework log is easier for me to do in class than if I taught single subject.
