K!
By Em

Clip to ScrapBook
The first weeks of K are very difficult, when the children enter I have them do puzzles, drawing, or simple activities they would have seen at home (ie Mr. Potato Head, playdough)Then like the previous poster said lots of
movement, we talk and read a story, then we freeze dance or shake your sillies out, then we sing some songs they know, I go over the different centers in our room and rules (I close the blocks and paint until I can explain better) then I let them have free choice and play- they can't wait to play with all the new things. We usually do a drawing of what we liked about our first day, gives
me a quick idea of who can do what- ie name, drawings ect...

My daily schedule after the first day:
8:15- enter, put away stuff, read a book on carpet
8:30- Morning meeting (calendar, weather, read aloud, songs, letter/sound of the week, Morning message)
9:00- Literacy centers and guided reading or whole group litereacy activity. ( I introduce them slowly, introducing one group at a time the first week and the rest of free choice, week 2 two groups, week 3 three groups ect...)
9:30- Phonological awareness activity (whole group)
10:00- snack and recess
10:15- Outside play
10:45- Shared reading or shared/modelled writing
11:00- specials (PE, art, computer, music, special guest)
11:30- lunch and outside
12:30- Independant reading (later in year, earlier, we do read aloud, or songs, games ect...
1:00- Math
1:40- recap of day, story and songs
2:00- Home

We use the Jolly Phonics program loosley and teach a letter/sound a week, I use guided reading, reading conferences and running records to assess reading skills, writing I use their writing journals and I usually get a base sample as well to assess, I perdiodically pull students in small groups to assess other skills such as math concepts, letter sound recognition, rhyming skills ect...

I hope this helps a bit and isn't too overwhelming.
