Consequences
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
Go positive reinforcement and "catch them being good" and you will do a ton to support the emotional problems.

As for consequences, hit them where it hurts. Missed recess should be sitting outside with the rest but unable
to participate.

We think in terms of "community service." You took something away from the community, you need to give back. Help the custodian or Head Lunch Supervisor with some chores during lunch. Pick up liter around the playyard while the class has recess. Think about your school and which people might appreciate help and would not degrate the child but would also not make

it so fun that they would want to do this more than whatever got them there.

One last positive idea that involves the kids. I have a "warm fuzzy jar." Anyone in our class can catch someone doing something kind for another person. They share what it is and add a round cotton ball into the jar. When it fills up, I add a Paper Clip to our chain.

Paper Clip chain - Kids can earn them for good behavior in art, music, pe, or anytime someone else is teaching your kids. When it hits the floor there is a celebration. (Extra 15 min. of recess, 1/2 hr. video, popcorn party, slumber party - kids change into pjs at the end of the day and can find a spot to lay and read in the classroom.
