Modeling Writing
By Katy

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm in a very similiar situation. This is the end of my 1st year teacing 6th grade (taught 3rd the last few years) and writing has not been my forte this year. However, I just went to a great writing conference on modeling
and writing together with kids. I'm excited by the possibilities for increasing kids (and my own) enjoyment of writing next year. The conference was by Regie Routman and based on her book Writing Essentials. It has a great DVD at the back where she models for us how to model with kids, how to share, how to conference. Her advice is to pick a topic (the book helps with this) and to
write off the cuff. Make mistakes, show the kids that their draft doesn't have to be a perfect process. Show them that that isn't what's important for a draft. I've tried some of the modeling techniques already this year and found great success once I take the pressure off the kids and myself to be perfect right off the bat.
