I don't know if it necessarily has anything to do with the teacher being a first year teacher, although it's possible. I'm a first year teacher who co-teaches with a woman who has been teaching for 20 years! The kids run| wild whenever she does anything with them. She doesn't seem to have much control, and then suddenly she tries to gain control by raising her voice. On the other hand, I have almost no problems with my students. I have consistent and clear expectations and I don't raise my voice. It may have more to do with her management style than her experience as a teacher. There are a few other veteran | | teachers in my school who seem to have no control. A few of my students had to spend half a day in one of these classrooms, and they came back to report that it was a nightmare and never wanted to go back in there; they like the respect and calmness of our classroom. Kids at that age just like to see what they can get away with when there's a sub. Kids of all ages will do it, especially those middle schoolers. My brother (a sophomore in HS) admitted to me that they like to see what they can get away with when there's a sub. Sad but true. With some of these middle school kids I don't know if there's a "cure" to the way they behave when there's a sub.
