Roving Is Just Bad!
By Carol

Clip to ScrapBook
Roving assignment are the worst. I avoid them at all costs if I can. Sometimes you can't though so you just have to grin and bear it.

Never complain to school staff or you will be talked about or written up. That is
what this board is for; to vent without fear of repercussion. I've been subbing for twenty years and I have learned, the hard way, what works and what doesn't work and complaing always gets you in trouble. Teacher's and school support staff will cover up for each other so watch what you say and to whom you say it.

I had one friend who was roving and the classroom teacher, before she

left the room, made a nasty remark about her to the entire sixth grade class. The particulars aren't important but guess how much respect the kids had for her that period? None!

Classroom instructional aides can also give you a great big headache if your only there for a period or two as well. Some are super but some use the opportunity to play teacher. Some of the aides are more immature than the kids and will yell at them, threaten them, engage in senseless arguments with them and generally provoke them into needless confrontations. That makes your day even more stressful and could get you, not the aide in trouble.

Some roving assignments are structured so that you have ample time to get to and from the next classroom but a lot of them don't. Too bad if the other teacher stresses. I figure it says more about them than me. I just blow them off. After all no one in their right mind can expect you to be in two places at once. So if they try to write you up because they missed two minutes of their planning time or what-ever then it won't count.

Down with Roving,
Carol
