I think special education does have a bad rep. I believe in it! I was a special education students once and would not have made it past high school without it! I now have two bachelor degrees and a masters! I would talk to
the special education teachers in you school and ask what they like and do not like about it. Every school has a different program. Special education demands a lot more from teachers then in the regular setting, but there is nothing like seeing a student who normally would struggle succeed. To answer the last questions - yes students should get out of special education eventually, at least

most. I usually judge a school district on this - if student are starting to be transitions from the special education department to full mainstream then I think the schools special education department is a success. While not every student with needs will be able to be in a regular setting without support services, I think that most can eventally make it there. Especially by the middle school/junior high years.
