Books

My first suggestion is to make sure that you give a little bit of everything. You never know who your getting and nothing would be more discouraging than getting a reading list full of book you can't handle.

I just starting
reading a "Katie Kazoo Switcharoo" book to my class for read aloud. They are really enjoying it. I always have a hard time remembering where the 3rd graders start the year on average since I have a 2/3 room. I would say this would be a "high-average" book for over the summer into 3rd.

For a "must read" why not do something like asking them to read one of the versions of Cinderella.

There are so many at so many different reading levels that you could have a great discussion to start off the school year.

I have an obnoxious list of titles if you need them.

Another idea (sorry I _love_ books):
Shel Silverstein or Jack Prelutsky
Pick one of their books and have the kids come in with their favorite poem. (I love "It's Raining Pigs and Noodles" by Prelutsky - the title just cracks me up!)

Junie B. Jones books are always a big hit in my room. Yes, even with my boys. She's just a funny kid.
