I found a site with a game where the kids place the states on a blank map of the US. I have 2nd and 3rd graders and they are totally loving this game and it's really geared at older kids.

Google "Place the State" you are looking for the Intermediate game, although there are other versions.

To hook my kids I played before I told them about it and gave them my best score. Of course, they are driven to beat me! You'd be amazed how they will sit at this game without really knowing where anything goes and use an atlas to help them figure it out.
