4th reading block
By ALI

Clip to ScrapBook
This is what my language arts block looks like in my 4th grade classroom:

9:10-9:30 Comprehension Quarterlies/Shared Reading
9:30-10:30 Guided Reading/Literature Circles/Independent Reading
10:30-10:50 Read Aloud
10:50-11:30
Writer's Workshop

Comprehension Quarterlies is whole class reading. We focus on reading strategies.
Guided Reading is ability based in flexible groups. I focus more on non-fiction texts. Sometimes I do Literature Circles instead with fiction books. They are assigned a certain part of the book with questions (or other activities), and then they meet as a group and discuss.
For

Read Aloud I read about a chapter a day from a chapter book.
Writer's Workshop is mini-lessons, writing time, revising, editing, etc.

In my school district we use Balanced Literacy. Our books and teacher's manuals come from Rigby Literacy. I also use Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 4-6 by Fountas and Phinnel. I love that book. For writing I try to use the 6 Traits.
