This is my seventh year and 2nd one teaching 4th grade. My class had good reading skills, but could not add without their fingers. Forget multiplication skills. It took me 3 months and they had already 'mastered' it in
3rd.
My class is fidgety, talkative, disrespectful, can't get along, and doesn't know what a hallway line is. They argue back to me, boss each other, have no rules at home, and many do not do any homework.
I have not been able to do anything creative with them, as they have no self control and because of NCLB. There is no time or energy left to have fun after we document everything,

etc. Even a small transition gets them wound up. The year has been long and boring to me and to them.
I am leaving teaching. I do not know what I will do, but I know that teaching is not it. I do not like the way education is headed and I do not want to be a part of it.
