I am currently working for Sylvan and I can tell you right now that you don't want to do it. I got the job about 9 months ago when funds are low and I saw the add and said "Wow that could be for me." I was hired on the spot| as a reading teacher. After helping several students with their math homework it was discovered that I know how to do high levels of math: Algebra, Geometry and Trig. So then they had me teaching that. I was never trained on it and the math teachers make $12 and hour where as I teach it and only make $10. And that's $10 in Southern California. My monthly Sylvan paycheck of $200 | | a month doesn't even cover my $330 dollar car payment. I am currently looking for a regualar teaching job and asked the Sylvan manager for a reference letter. She keeps putting writing one for me off. I might have to leave without one as the pay is too little for the work I do. It is extremely hard teaching 3 students in 3 different subject areas. I can only hope that I have done no harm to the students as none of them have gotten all the good teaching skills I have to offer.
