Not too uncommon
By AmberM

Clip to ScrapBook
I have found that these type symptoms seem to go along with students that should have been retained in Kindergarten and end up in my first grade class by parent request. I see it all the time here in Louisiana where kinder.
is not mandatory. He probably is just not ready to produce what is expected in first grade and knows it is easier to write in anything than to have to think! It definately sounds like he needs another year. In the mean time he could read aloud and tape himself reading the story before being aloud to answer the comprehension questions. I also have my kiddos circle the subtraction signs
before they begin a page with mixed facts so they remember to count back toward zero on those.
A fresh start in first next year will probably boost his confidence since he is already reading on primer level and will seem "smart" to the the ones just coming in.
If there are problems at the end of next year he may just truly be a develop mentally delayed student.
