Maybe an Anxiety Disorder?
By Joan

Clip to ScrapBook
- He comes in tardy every day with no backpack, jacket, folder, etc.
- It does not matter how much work I give him
- He manages to chew holes in his shrits, destroy erasers, pencils, and small rewards.
- Just
today he misbehaved so much, that I didn;t get even a qtr. of 1:1 testing done
- Nothing matters to this child.
- He wouldn't even do his work in another classroom
- His behavior patterns scream "A.D.H.D."

Dear jc:

I have copied seven statements from your posting that suggest an anxeity disorder - perhaps GED or SA or even ODD, etc.

Children who suffer from anxiety disorders

are often diagnosed with ADHD or ADD but are in fact so tense they are unable to concentrate and work. They also have what is called "the hesitation factor" which is illustrated in his being tardy and being unable to complete his assignments. "Chewing" is a big red flag - this definitely indicates anxiety (anxiety means intense distress) but whether or not this child has a disorder (found under the mental health umbrella) would require a medical diagnosis. Because of extreme distress and frustration, behavioural problems are common.

I would suggest that this child see a psychologist or pediatrician who specializes in mental health issues for children. I really doubt if Ritalin is your answer. Good luck as it appears this child will need it -

Joan
