Hi Kathy,
How is his writing elsewhere? And how is his reading? Strong or just so so. My son has the same problem. That is why I am on the site, looking for assistance. I know the problem. My son is Dyslexic. He has learned to read pretty well but it affects his handwriting tremendously and everytime he has to write he pitches a fit. I don't know about your student but he may have some learning difficulties that make it very difficult to get his thoughts down on paper. He is probably smart in other regards which causes him frustration ie the tantrums.
