I have to say first that I would never use real money. I have not read up on the research related to teaching money but how could they ever expect a teacher to come up with enough real money for the whole class? I know the district wouldn't give it to us... Anyway, at our school we have realized through testing that students (across all grades) have the hardest time recognizing coins - especially when they are copies on a paper which is common on our state assessment. I would review recognition and value and then work on adding and making change. Work up to two or three step problems.
