Thank you for your opinion. It is important that you understand that I do not use this system with all classes. I only use it with difficult ones. From the moment that I walked into the school, the principal took me asside| and told me that I would have to be strict because this is a really tough classroom. This school is known for being the toughest in the area. I use this system because it is used by most teachers in the classrooms that I am in. It provides consistency with what teachers are already doing. I also think it is important for you to understand the type of behaviours that are taking | | place in this grade 3 class. I could not even introduce myself because there were students that were making loud noises while I was trying to do so, just to test me. If I did not use this system, the students would continue to yell while I am trying to teach. It allows me to deal with the behaviour and not interrupt my lesson any further. It is not embarrassing because the student is doing the behaviour intentionally (ie shooting an elastic at another student while I am teaching). As I would deal with one child getting hurt, another would be hurting someone else. I am not talking about putting someone's name on the board because they are talking in class. It is important that the students know exactly what the consequences will be or they will continue to test me. I also allow them a chance to earn back recess time by being on-task and following directions. If you have any alternative suggestions as to how to deal with these behaviours listed, I would love to hear them. I started making the positive behaviour list for teachers because I was asked several times if I could do this. The students that are on-task ("caught being good" as some teachers call it), deserve to be recognized for this as well. I always allow all students the chance to get on the list or earn their name off of the warning list. I have found the same problem with structured games. They cannot get along during games or wait their turn. As for free time, as time is coming off, they continue to act the same and do not seem to see the connection between time coming off and their behaviour. I always only send one person at a time to the bathroom. They seem to think it is a game though and I end up with all of the students needing to go to the bathroom. I may try taking them as a whole class but this can get hectic having the entire class out in the hallway.
