I agree that the child should be tested and a family history taken. I don't want to stir up anything, but I once had a student who would honestly "forget", not remember, or "didn't hear" directions, questions, etc. Turns out the child was having seizures, very small, not visible to anyone, but enough to "erase" memory of what was said prior to the seizure. They finally found out about the seizures after the younger sibling had a grand mal. Turns out that mom "used to" have seizures when she was a kid and never thought to tell anyone!
