Take it from me... By 3rd Grade Teacher

I went through National Boards last year and totally bombed. I didn't do well at the assessment center or on the portfolio. I was completely horrified when I received my results. I worked my rear off for months and even| had a certified teacher read everything. She made suggestions, I revised, she read again. I also did not have a mentor group to work with. I am redoing the parts that I failed this summer and next school year. I have talked to two NB leaders at local universities and they both said they have NEVER known anyone to pass boards without being part of a group. I'm sure that lots of people | | who, but the people I know that certified were part of a support system. I will be part of a group that meets weekly next year. I have also purchased two books from the Heineman site that I think will be a great help. I'll have to find the name of the author and book and get back with you. Do you live close to any universities that might have a program for you? Have you contacted neighboring counties to see if they have anything you could be part of? Even if you have to drive an hour or so I highly recommend it. I hope I haven't scared you to death. I just wanted to share my experience with you honestly - anything to help prevent anyone else from experiencing what I have. Also... study, study, study the standards. Read them before you start, when you are planning your units, and when you are completing your written responses. I wish you much luck! BTW, I'm working on the Middle Childhood Generalist certificate. What are you working on?
