I have seen some parents homeschool well and others not so well. I have thought of doing it myself because my son has shown little improvement this year. If I were to homeschool, we would be visiting the zoo, science museums,| historical places... The one home schooling family that I happen to know goes no where. The kids read and answer ?s out of a workbook. They middle schoolers don't know any geography (They told me mom doesn't have them do any.). There are a ton of holes in their educ. The only time they spend with other kids is Sunday at church and swimming lessons. On the plus side, they | | are usually well behaved (However, the son behaves badly for others and in front of others.), independent learners, self motivated and can entertain themselves. On the accountablility issue, I learned that in our state home schooling parents can test their own children, don't have turn the scores in, must turn in schedule and academic plan but don't have to provide proof they are actually doing it. Our students must take a test at the end of grades 3, 5, 8 and 12. If they don't pass, they can't move to the next grade. I think home schoolers should have to meet the same criteria. To have these kids have their first mandatory test be the SAT would be wrong. Why shouldn't the parents have to meet the same standards as the public school?
