I agree with the other posters. In NJ, we have had a Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. I don't know if it is still in existence. The first few years they had the award, our district chose to participate. Each building in the district selected one, and you received some money to spend on your classroom, which was nice. The thing I didn't like was that the people who decided it were the principal of the building and the two most recent winners. Teachers were nominated by any member of the staff, but they were the committee to decide it. I can say this having won the award myself. For all the reasons the previous posters stated, our district chose not to participate after about 5 years, feeling all of its teachers should be winners.
