if that's the case, there's your problem! the kids don't have a chance to get to know you, develop a repoire with you, get a chance to trust you and learn that you're smart and fair. if you were just making an analogy, ignore the above. just be consistent and fair--don't try to be your mentor teacher--have a sense of humor; make some fun activities to get them to learn...(this spring my class has used Trix to review percent/decimal/fraction and write a creative story about how the rabbit finally got his, Skittles to learn about probability, and m&m's to learn about positive and negative integers.)
