Here's a lesson plan on Main Idea

1.Standards: Listen/Speak 1.1 Listen attentively.
Reading Comprehension 2.7 Retell the central ideas of simple expository or narrative passages.

Overall Content Objective: Students
will identify the main idea of a text.

Specific Objective: Students will work in pairs to look at pictures and discuss what they have in common. They will decide on a main idea for each set of pictures.

Materials: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, front of the book covered with construction paper, list of words without a heading, and picture worksheet.

2.Motivation/Rationale:Take

out the book The Snowy Day and have the front cover hidden so the children cannot see the title.

3.Directed Lesson: a. Begin the lesson by telling the students that they are going to be learning about the main idea of a story. Ask the students if they know what the main idea is and explain that it is the most important thing about the story. Suggest a few stories that the students are familiar with and tell them the main idea.

b. Tell the students you're going to read a book to them but that you will not let them see the front cover or the title.

c. Read The Snowy Day to students.

d. After listening to the reading, students will decide on the main idea of the story. Teacher will aid the students in coming up with the main idea if students are having trouble.

e. Teacher will then take off the construction paper from the book to reveal the title of the book that was read.

f. Teacher will talk about the title and then talk with the students to see if anyone came up with a main idea that was a close match to the title.

4.Guided Practice: Teacher will display a few lists of words to the students without headings. The teacher will ask the students to think of a word or group of words that could be used to describe what the words are mostly about.

5. Independent Practice: Students will work in pairs to look at different sets of pictures and discuss what they have in common. They will decide on a main idea for each set of pictures.

6. Supplementary Activities: Have students read a short paragraph with a partner and select the best title from several given. Some students will be able to create their own title that would best describe the main idea of the paragraph.

7. Evaluations:Students will be evaluated through teacher observation during guided and independent practice.
