What grade do you teach? My 3rd graders don't ask what they've missed, and I think our schools 4th graders wouldn't either. Since the child was out all week, did you call on Wednesday to see if he/she was okay? I would hope that if it was serious, that parent would have called the school to let someone know as well.

If you did all of that, then I'd say you weren't out of line, but a child being absent for a week should strike some concern in you.
