Idea: rainforest

Rainforest: First, we hung green netting on the ceiling,creating a canopy look. Then,we created a tree trunk from brown bulletin board paper and hung it in the center of the room with paper clips from the ceiling. We twisted paper for vines. We created big leaves. The students helped draw animals which we laminated. Even 1st graders are able to copy pictures using the overhead projector. If it's not perfect, that's okay. It is a student creation. You can then do a theme on the rainforest, bringing animal groups, traits, etc. You can write reports, compare/contrast animals, write stories, etc. The rainforest lends itself to just about every subject:math, science/social studies, reading, language/writing, even physical education (study games played by the indigenous (sp?) people of the rainforest.
