Clip to ScrapBook
Hello,

I really like coming back to a clean classroom. I straighten my classroom every afternoon after school. I like to come into a clean classroom in the morning. One morning I had to clean up the classroom from having
a sub the day before.

I also like when the sub leaves notes...How did the students behave? Where there any students in particular who caused trouble? (I will deal with it the next day) Also let me know how far you got with the lesson plans. I tend to over plan so subs don't run out of things to do, so I like to know where things were left at.

It's a good idea to leave a business card

with your name, sub ID number, and phone number. I've had several good subs who write their name and ID number on my sub lesson plans. Those get tossed after I read through them. I would've called some back if I had a business card (I save them in my desk).

Try to follow the routine and lesson plans as best as you can. I don't leave "busy" work. My district hires subs who have a teaching license, therefore I expect them to be able to teach the next math lesson, reading lesson, etc...so I can continue on when I come back. Once I had a sub who wasn't sure about the math lesson. It turned out to be a total mess and my kids were confused. I had to reteach it the next day. I understand that she may not have been familiar with the lesson or curriculum, but she could've asked another teacher, especially since she specifically wrote a note stating that she wasn't sure what to do!

Always ask if you have a question or are unsure of something. You can ask another teacher or a trusted student. In my district we are required to write 2-3 names of students we trust.

As a sub (I was a sub before) you don't always feel appreciated. You walk into a different building everyday. You teach kids you don't know. You have to ask and/or search for the bathroom. You don't know any of the staff. You follow a different schedule everyday...augh! But you are appreciated. I wouldn't be able to take a sick day or a personal day if it weren't for subs. Thank you!!!!
