-I always leave detailed plans. I understand if something doesn't work out or something happens that prevents the plan from being followed; however, I would like a sub to at least try. I have had subs who won't
-Come early to look at the plans. Consult with another teacher if you are confused. -Don't be a buddy to the students. You can be friendly and nice, but you also need to be firm and authoritive. -I know some subs correct papers and some teachers like that. I wouldn't complain if you did them; however, grading papers is something that I would like to do for a number of reasons. One, I like to get the feel of how everyone is doing. I know I can get that by looking through them; however, I really get a strong feeling as I correct. When I mark a question wrong on one person's paper, I usually remember that someone else got the same question wrong a little bit ago. Then, I can go over that problem with the class if a lot of people got it wrong. Plus, I have my "own" way of grading and sometimes a sub won't know the way and then that can get confusing. -A rule of thumb for subbing: Put yourself in the teachers shoes. What would you appreciate? What would you dislike? A rule of thumb for both substitues and for teachers: If you were a parent and had a child in the room that you were in, what you expect out of their teacher/substitute. Treat the kids and the learning experiences how you would want your child's teacher and/or substitute to treat your child and his or her learning experience!
