By T

Clip to ScrapBook
prep: soak lima beans overnight in cold water and make copies of a large lima shape for students to label

vocabulary: germination, seed coat, food storage, embryo (baby plant)

1. show a dry lima and a lima soaked overnight,
compare and explain the water starts germination - the growth of a new plant
2. pass out lima beans and explore w/ senses
3. peel off the seed coat!
4. pull apart halves of beans (you may notice symmetry) and look at the embryo (plant start)!
5. pass out copies of your lima shape
6. Write title "The Germination of a Lima Bean" and label other parts
7. List
other seeds we eat and eat a seed of your own (we like sunflower)
8. send home a dry lima w/ instructions so kids can teach their family!

PS - My tactile "energetic" students always love this lesson and totally pulvarize the bean, lol!
