Poetry to First Graders
By Sinead

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,
I am currently teaching poetry to my first graders in NYC. We are following Lucy Caulkin's Nuts and Bolts of Teaching Writing. I have begun the unit by encouraging the students to think like poets.. using their five senses. The children have started with list poems, frame poems and poems using repetition. I am not planning to get into the structured poetry (haiku, cinquain, etc.). I have definitely not forced them to rhyme words at the end of each line... They seem to be really enjoying it! Good luck!
