Clip to ScrapBook
Kids have to see good writing and have it modeled for them. I would start with just paragraph writing and start getting good description and strong verbs from your students.

Now, take some of those paragraphs students
have written and make them into overheads and revise them with the class. (without names on them). Next, photocopy the paragraphs and have students work in cooperative groups to edit the papers. It is always more powerful when their peers have the red pen.

I don't always go to publish on all our work. It depends on your focus for the lesson. If conventions are killing you then go

back to sentences and review "perfect sentences". Have students write perfect sentences on sentence strips to show to the class. If they aren't perfect everyone has to say why.
