This is my first year teaching 1st grade and I chose a Hawaiian theme. I got permission from my principal and she let me paint my room a beautful yellow color. It has definitely brightened up the dirty white walls. I made my word wall with a triangular banner (pennant style) and die-cut letters (available from teacher supply stores). I hot glued on the letters and then hung it on my wall. I bought a raffia table skirt from Oriental Trading and wrapped it around my desk. I bought a palm tree cut-out and posted it by the door. I used a banner "Island Party" and students who achieve an A on the weeks Spelling, get to hang their test on the Party board and receive an Aloha reward (from the luau treasure box). I found a lot of cool things at Party City and Oriental Trading. I have had so much fun with this theme, I am planning a move to a different state this next year and plan to use the same theme, minus my yellow walls.
