in fact, I encounter many teachers who specifically do not want their students addressing someone by only the letter. What are you teaching them? Are you preparing them for the time they will have a job and will address
their boss by his or hers initials? I have a difficult last name, but I let them know that if they try that is all that I ask. And in return I remind them that I will try to pronounce their names correctly. Sometimes I have to remind a student that if they respond in a sarcastic or bitter manner when someone mispronounces their name, then they will go through life needlessly making enemies.
I demonstrate to them how to gently correct a mispronounciation. I sub in some very poor districts and for some of these families their self-respect and good family name are their most prized possessions.
