blending sounds
By Nani

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Nicole,
In Kindergarten, before we even teach letters and sounds, we start by doing games to make them aware of words and that words are made up of sounds. First, we use compound words. I say, "When I say rain (snap right hand) bow (snap left hand), then you say, rainbow(clap). It's like you're saying it slow and they need to say it fast. (It's so much easier to show you than write it down)
With ESLL children you need to use lots of picture clues. That really helps mine, even the ones that come in the ending of the school year.
This compound word "game" is the first thing we do in the beginning of the year, then we move to onset rime and segmenting.
I hope this helps a little.
Aloha,
Nani
