Nothing happened! Some of the students were trying to add an apostrophe when they spelled out 'lots' as I wrote it, but none of them questioned that I left it out. The teacher was in the room, but I don't know if she noticed the difference or not--I was too paranoid to look at her. Anyway, I appreciate all of your wonderful advice! I've visited this board off and on for the past couple of years, but this was my first time to post. I'm sure I'll be back, and maybe I can help someone else the way you all have helped me.
