I have had a few run ins with rude students in the past... Here are a few suggestions:1. Record EVERYTHING! 2. I have the student come with me to call the parent. I start the conversation by explaining why I am calling | (Susie has been making some bad choices in the classroom) and then I have the student get on the phone and tell the parent exactly what they said. These conversations sometimes end in tears, but they work. 3. Detention. It's usually a half an hour but I kept one student for an hour and a half (until his mother got out of work)last week. I always make sure that during the detention |
| I specifically tell them why they are there. "you have detention with me today because of the rude way you spoke to me. I don't speak to you that way and it is unnacceptable for you to speak to me that way. Every time you choose to be disrespectful you will be after school with me and each time it will be longer. I expect an apology before you leave today". 4. I often find that sending them out doesn't work b/c either they don't receive any consequences OR the consequences they receive are from the principal and not me, therefore they don't see me as the authority figure. If I send them down to the office I make sure that I let them know what I recommend. (we have an office referral form and we can check off the desired consequence, parental contact, office detention or suspension.) I usually only send them down if I feel that they should have a stronger consequence than I can give. I hope some of these help. I am in a very difficult school and I have found that these consequences work. Good luck.
