It's funny; when I was a student, someone would ask every sub whether or not we could shorten the name. I remember one teacher with a particularly difficult name who went only by her last initial. Since I have begun subbing, though, not one student has asked me to shorten my name. When I was a ST, my CT had a VERY difficult last name, and this issue came up. She was completely against it. She found the initial thing to be disrespectful and almost like babying the students. It isn't a big deal to me at all, but I do see that point of view now, and since my name is not that difficult to pronounce, I would not allow them to call me Miss D.
