Mass Music By Maggie

Lucy, I hope I'm not too late to respond to this message. Over the past 5 years our k-8 school has truly increased the students mass participation. In our school we go to mass every Tuesday. Each week a different teacher plans the mass. When we plan we try to think of ways to involve the students. We bring the Word to them at their level. I planned a mass around the theme of angels and then did a PowerPoint with Alabama's song "Angels Among Us" during the meditation time, after communion. It was awesome and the students all sang along! We have also tried to go outside the usual "boring" hymns. | | Try using some popular christian music during the mass. We'll even play cd's and the students will sing with them. The group Mercy Me is great. They sing "I Can Only Imagine". Students enjoy hearing music that they know. Another really great singer is Jon Angotti. He plays with a band and sounds a lot like Billy Joel. He actually came to our school and livened up our mass. Then afterwards talked to the students about his faith and performed. It was awesome and the students were up clapping and singing inspirational songs! We now play his cd's at mass and students all sing along. Sometimes bringing in musical guests will show the students it can be "cool" to sing. I'll play christian groups cd's in class while the students are working and they'll become familiar with the music and want to sing at church. I love to hear children singing. They say singing is like praying twice, when children do it their praying three times! I hope this helps, It really helped us!
