Gifted Reader, Bad Speller, Been There!
By Been there...

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a daughter who it sounds could be the student that you are talking about. She did start reading at 3, had speech from age 3 to age 10, but COULD READ!!! Her writing was awful and at the age of 22 it still isn't anything
to brag about. Because of her verbal scores, etc. she didn't qualify for services, so we started having her type as much as she could. Typing allowed her to slow down and fix her own errors; making her independent. When she began learning cursive in 3rd grade she wasn't ready, but by the time 4th grade came along she was ready and things began to improve some.

It has always

been spectulated that her speech and writing skills were tied together. She did great in math and would understand the "rules" of writing, but would easily get frustrated with the exceptions - because they weren't concrete rules.

Having taught for many years I have seen this repeated a few times with some of my students and even though they are far and few between. Do what you can for modifications and as they mature they will learn to become more responsible for their success. Good Luck
