Hi Lori. My name is Dana and I would like to comment about your message. I happened to come across this website looking for a lesson plan for my reading lessons for next week~I too am retaining a young girl who is 6 in my
first grade class. It was heart-breaking for me as well. This is my second year at the school district and I love the district. It is a middle-class to high class district where parent communication/involvement is terrific. My girl definetely relies on picture books and can't decode sounds. In the beginning of the school year, she would call out any sound. (For example dog would be pig/cat)..she
didn't know her beginning sounds. Now that we are in the middle of the school year, she has progressed very much...but she is still repeating. The parents have been very supportive in my decision.
I feel that it is your and your child study team to agree on...you know his abilitlies and his weaknesses...Ask the parents if they would like to have him continue to struggle through the years...repeating (especially in first grade) will allow them to grow-up socially and academically...
Let me know how you make out...and GET SOME SLEEP!!!
