I don't know if this will help, but I have my students pick one family member who has done something memorable to them and have them write about it and then this is included in their own autobiographies. I also used a math problem where they had to figure out how many grandparents they would have if they went back so many generations - they were amazed. We have also brought in pictures, music and objects (as well as food) which have been passed down through their families as part of their heritage. It isn't really a family tree but it does bring to light things their families have that are important to them.
