Not Doing Anything
By Fourth Grade Teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with the above poster. I would conference with mom and child. During this conference I would indicate that I will now be grading work completed in class to get a clear picture of his ability level. He must finish X number of sentences or X number of math problems in class, period. If it's not finished, don't send it home. He can spend recess, free times, etdc. doing the work until it is completed. This may sound harsh but what about later on? Is his boss going to say, "It's OK, Tom, you don't have to any work here. Feel free to take it all home and have it back to me tomorrow." This might work in a profession or two but most jobs do require task completion during the work day.
