Plan, plan, plan
By Heather

Clip to ScrapBook
The summer before I started my first teaching job (2nd grade) I was terrified. I imagined the kids would be running wild and I would have no control.
I decided that in order to prevent this from happening I needed to
make a plan. I read the First Days of School by Harry Wong. I got a lot out of the book for my first year teaching. I set up my routines and procedures for everything! I planned out how to handle everything from supplies to restroom breaks to the line. I made a discipline plan and wrote out all the steps. I even wrote a parent handbook that addressed issues that parents would want to know
about.
Before the first day of school I wrote out a script (something I still do before the first day). I don't want to forget something important so I plan, plan, plan.
After all this preparation I certainly looked and acted very confident. Inside I was still scared and nervous, but the kids and parents did not pick up on it.
Now I have been teaching three years and I continue to consider my routines, procedures, and discipline every summer.
