Spelling Test In K?
By MJH

Clip to ScrapBook
I've taught K for 12 of my 14 years of teaching and have never heard or thought of giving a spelling test to a K student. Where do you live?

This is totally developmentally inapporiate and should not be the determining
factor as to whether a student is retained in K. I do retain students but based on letter knowledge, letter/sound knowledge, number recognition and maturity. Retention is never an easy choice but spelling is not a reason to retain in my opinion.

If he is struggling in all area and doesn't know his letters or the related sounds then I would consider retention but only after getting

the child some extra help. I would ask an older student in the school to tutor, get an assistant or volunteer to tutor and I myself would spend a few extra minutes a day helping a child. I would request a conference with both the teacher and the principal before making any kind of decision.
