I teach 4th grade, and I use homework passes, with a small twist. They can use their homework pass as a bathroom pass (helps curve the emergency bathroom runs), homework pass (can only be used on certain assignments), they can exchange it for 10 minutes of free computer time, or time to hold a stuffed animal. You would be suprised at the boys who fight over stuffed animals! That is their favorite, and with ground rules set ahead of time, it doesn't cause any distractions. I also use tickets for the treasure box, and my 4th graders love the small toys in the box.
