Word Games
By Stacy

Clip to ScrapBook
One game that my students seem to LOVE is BAM, ZAP, WAP, BOP (I use any of those sound words I can think of). It is cheap to make. I take a strips of paper and write words that I want my students to read correctly on them.
Sometimes I use sight words, words that they confuse (tack and take, cut and cute...each on their own slip of paper), and even just sounds. On several other strips of paper I write the name of the game. I fold all of the strips in half and put them in a paperbag. Two or more students can play this game at a time. The first student picks a slip. If they read it incorrectly, they
put it back and their turn is over. If they get it correct, they get to keep their slip and can choose to pick another slip or pass the bag to the next person. If they pick the name of the game, they have to put all of their words back and their turn is over. I usually have them put the slip of paper with the name of the game to the side so that we have a winner at the end. You can either play until all of the slips are chosen or until you run out of time. I like this game because the student who struggles with reading skills doesn't always lose.
