You may want to have them break apart some of the bigger numbers into more friendly numbers. I do this with my students (it's in our curriculum too).

For example (this one is kind of easy):

27 X 20 could be 27X10+27X10 Most 4th graders know their multiples of 10. They can break the 20 into two 10's and then add them together.

Another example:
32X12 could be 32X10=320 and 32X2=64 Then add 320+64=384.

Big numbers can be overwhelming, so we break numbers up into what we call "friendly" or "landmark" numbers. My lower math kids can do this too.
